Larger offspring associated with lower temperatures across species of Microporella, a widespread colonial invertebrate

چکیده

Among life history traits, offspring size has one of the most direct impacts on fitness, influencing growth, recruitment and survival individual, therefore affecting population, ultimately macroevolutionary outcomes. Despite its ecological evolutionary importance, little is known about how varies in lineages over timescales, especially for colonial organisms. Here, we use cheilostome bryozoan genus Microporella to investigate variation lineage. The species-rich, cosmopolitan, a calcified skeleton (and hence readily preserved fossil record), brooder. brood structure (ovicell) reliably reflects space occupied by larva ovicell good proxy size. Using suite biotic abiotic factors, ask what best explains offspring/larval contemporary species , changes through millions years We find that affected combination module water temperature (or latitude when are included), while fecundity levels nutrients have weak no effect this trait. species, descendant statistically more likely larger than their putative ancestors, with difference between pairs explained temporal latitudinal shifts. Our results suggest both controls historical considerations important understanding trait evolution.

Offspring Size Affects the Post-metamorphic Performance of a Colonial Marine Invertebrate

The positive relationship between offspring size and offspring fitness is a fundamental assumption of life-history theory, but it has received relatively little attention in the marine environment. This is surprising given that substantial intraspecific variation in offspring size is common in marine organisms and there are clear links between larval experience and adult performance. The metamo...

Offspring size effects mediate competitive interactions in a colonial marine invertebrate.

Over the past 30 years, numerous attempts to understand the relationship between offspring size and fitness have been made, and it has become clear that this critical relationship is strongly affected by environmental heterogeneity. For marine invertebrates, there has been a long-standing interest in the evolution of offspring size, but there have been very few empirical and theoretical examina...

Larger testes are associated with a higher level of polyandry, but a smaller ejaculate volume, across bushcricket species (Tettigoniidae).

While early models of ejaculate allocation predicted that both relative testes and ejaculate size should increase with sperm competition intensity across species, recent models predict that ejaculate size may actually decrease as testes size and sperm competition intensity increase, owing to the confounding effect of potential male mating rate. A recent study demonstrated that ejaculate volume ...

A REVISION OF PLANT-ASSOCIATED VERTICILLIUM SPECIES

Molecular approaches were used to re-evaluate the morphological criteria used to identify plant-associated Verticillium species. ITS-RFLPs divided the 31 studied strains of seven Verticillium species, (including the type species V. luteo-album) into four clusters. Cluster one comprised strains of the type species, V. luteo-album, cluster two V. albo-atrum, V. dahliae, V. nubilum and V. tricorpu...
